TRADITIONS OF MEXICAN PAPER

by Mexican artist Humberto Spíndola

Humberto Spíndola is an artist who has worked in the Mexican folk art tradition of cut-paper since the 1980’s. His mastery of the paper art tradition and his ability to create bridges between the art form, which can be traced back to pre-Hispanic civilizations, and the contemporary arts makes him a much sought after figure in the scene. Spíndola has exhibited extensively in Mexico and internationally, including Paris, Helsinki, Lille, Bilbao, and San Diego, Argentina and, now, in Washington DC. His work is part of the numerous private collections as well as that of the British Museum in London.

Boxer Girl Mural-Censorship?

What do you all think?

Found on the blog "Bloomingdale (for now)"
-----------
"Tonight's bloomingdale civic association meeting will include discussion about the boxer girl mural. there seems to be a lot of pressure on the city to destroy the mural and the mayor's office is considering it.

if you are in support of this mural, or at least in support of the artist and property owner, please come to the meeting. in general it seems that dccah has taken a lot of heat this year, especially with public art. i imagine this is a pretty important discussion."

The network began with think tanks from Ghana, Cuba and El Salvador, and has since expanded to include Serbia, Mexico and Ethiopia. We are currently negotiating with groups in Iran and Nigeria.

Young Artist, Ryan Bugden

Check out this high school senior -- Ryan Bugden's photo realistic artwork. He creates all of these portraits using the Graffiti application on facebook -- mind boggling! My younger brother, Quinn, goes to school with Ryan at Georgetown Prep in Maryland. Quinn showed me his fan page on facebook yesterday -- check it out for more graffiti art:

Baltimore Show

I use to work at the Walters, so I thought I would promote them a bit here:

The Walters Art Museum is proud to present selected works from the John and Berthe Ford collection of traditional Indian and Himalayan art in visual dialogue with contemporary paintings by India born artist, Amita Bhatt. Bhatt derives her imagery from Hindu and Buddhist Tantric sources infused with her understanding of Western philosophy. She explores classic themes of desire, conflict, struggle and transcendence as they manifest themselves in the present day. This thought provoking installation recognizes the power of visual expressions to articulate, to mobilize, to activate, and to provoke. Informed by tradition but speaking in the present, Bhatt’s works explore fundamental struggles and eternal tensions common to all cultures.

The show will run from October 31st through December 13th , 2009.
Opening Reception: 3 pm to 5 pm, October 31st, 2009
Walters Art Museum, 600 N Charles St., Baltimore, Maryland 21201

'The Cube'

The Office of Motion Picture and Television Development and HBO are bringing ‘The Cube’ to the District this weekend. ‘The Cube,’ a 16 foot x 16 foot, four-sided video display, is a unique, new storytelling device that offers four different perspectives on the same scene simultaneously.

‘The Cube’ features two films, each two minutes and each played twice successively, on a rotating basis. In telling the same story from four distinct points of view, each side of the cube stands alone as an engaging film, and as one piece of a larger puzzle. As viewers move around the cube, they watch the story unfold from different perspectives, forming different perceptions, and often misperceptions, of the characters and plot. Only by watching the story unfold from multiple sides of the cube can one begin to see the bigger picture.

'The Cube' will be installed Thursday, October 8, at the plaza on the corner of Columbia Road, NW and Adams Mill Road, NW in Adams Morgan, and will operate Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 8 pm to 2 am.

Remembering Things Past: A Conversation Celebrating Anne Truitt

Last nights discussion at the Hirshhorn "moderated by Tim Gunn, chief creative officer at Liz Claiborne and former student of Truitt’s. Artist Martin Puryear, filmmaker Jem Cohen, photographer John Gossage, and associate curator Kristen Hileman share their unique perspectives on Truitt’s career as artist, professor, and author."

This panel was very unique in the sense that I walked away with a much better understanding of Truitt as a artist and a person. The format was a somewhat casual conversation between people who evidently had amazing experiences having Truitt in their lives. It was interesting hearing the perspectives of her past student (Tim Gunn) as well as colleagues and dear friends.

ACT OF GOD

Is being hit by lightning a random natural occurrence or a predestined event? Accidents, chance, fate and the elusive quest to make sense out of tragedy underpin director Jennifer Baichwal's (MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES) captivating new work, an elegant cinematic meditation on the metaphysical effects of being struck by lightning. To explore these profound questions, Baichwal sought out riveting personal stories from around the world--from a former CIA assassin and a French storm chaser to writer Paul Auster and improvisational musician Fred Frith. Anne Truitt: Perception and Reflection

October 8, 2009 to January 3, 2010

The first major exhibition of Truitt’s work since 1974, "Anne Truitt: Perception and Reflection" is a survey of two- and three-dimensional works made during the artist’s 50-year career. A variety of large-scale sculptures will be on view, including formative pieces from the early 1960's that suggest the architectural environment of the artist's childhood on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The retrospective also presents the column sculptures that became the hallmark of Truitt's profoundly focused practice. Acting as a painter as well as a sculptor, the artist wrapped color around the corners of these sculptures, creating visually poetic relationships between structure and surface. Throughout her work, she investigated proportion, scale and color, as well as perception and memory. After leaving the field of clinical psychology in the mid-1940's, Truitt began making figurative sculptures, but turned toward reduced geometric forms after seeing works by Barnett Newman and Ad Reinhardt in 1961. Despite affinities to the paintings of the Color Field artists often associated with Washington, D.C., and the sculpture of artists who came to be known as Minimalists, from the outset Truitt’s art was an independent exploration of abstraction and personal references. Truitt was born in Baltimore, MD, but lived in Washington for most of her adult life and has been largely under-recognized for her contribution to post-1960 art. The exhibition is organized by associate curator Kristen Hileman and will be accompanied by the first complete monograph on the artist.

Anne Truitt is organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The exhibition is made possible by the Henry Luce Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and The Judith Rothschild Foundation, with additional support from the Hirshhorn Board of Trustees and the Museum’s National Benefactors.

Curator Laura Roulet is an art historian and writer who specializes in contemporary and Latin American art. Ms. Roulet has organized exhibitions at the Mexican Cultural Institute, the Museum of Puerto Rican Art, Pepco’s Edison Place Gallery, Project 4, Fusebox, the District of Columbia Art Center (DCAC), and at other local galleries. She has also worked with the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, including contributing to the retrospective exhibition entitled "Ana Mendieta: Earth Body, Sculpture and Performance 1972-1985" which represents the most comprehensive survey of the artist’s works to date. She is also the author of Contemporary Puerto Rican Installation Art: The Guagua Aerea, the Trojan Horse and the Termite, a book which explores dynamic aspects of Puerto Rican art today.

The WSG has organized this exhibition as part of its 25th anniversary celebration and in conjunction with the 2010 centennial of the OAS’ historic headquarters. The show explores the ever-widening directions that contemporary sculpture has taken over the past decades beginning with the radical artistic, political and social changes of the 1960s and 1970s to the present. Ms. Roulet has selected work that offers parallel commentary with work from the AMA’s permanent collection and thereby creates a striking dialogue in terms of material choice, form, purpose and aesthetic. For instance, she notes that works such as Puerto Rican Rafael Ferrer’s Head and Patrick McDonough’s 090706 My Younger Than Jesus Award are “un-aspiring to grandeur, permanence or universal meaning,” both pieces engaging in their wry humor and “unmonumental” qualities (see image above). She also draws parallels between the minimalist geometric abstraction of Venezuelan Jesus Rafael Soto’s relief sculpture Escritura Hurtado (Hurtado Writing) and Joanne Kent’s Zen-like twin circular reliefs Isis Revsited and Hard Rain; and likewise, notes that Colombian Hugo Zapata’s Arca (Ark) and Foon Sham’s Column share “an organic version of the circular form.”

WSG member artists selected to participate in this exhibition are: Allan Arp, Maria Barbosa, Kyan Bishop, Adam Bradley, Renee Butler, Kirsten Campbell, Jeff Chyatte, Frederic Crist, Brent Crothers, Joel D'Orazio, Alonzo Davis, Bobby Donovan, Cheraya Esters, Leah Frankel, Carol Gellner Levin, Linda Hesh, Gale Jamieson, Mariah Josephy, Joanne Kent, Barbara Liotta, Dalya Luttwak, Donna McCullough, Patrick McDonough, Pattie Porter Firestone, Brian Reed, Foon Sham, and Millicent Young.

The Art Museum of the Americas was established in 1976 with the primary mission of furthering awareness and appreciation of the art and cultural traditions of the thirty-four OAS member countries, with particular emphasis on modern and contemporary art from Latin America and the Caribbean. The museum is located at 201 18th Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20006 and it is open to the public Tuesdays-Sundays from 10 am until 5 pm. The museum is closed on Federal holidays.
