This fall some of the DC theatre community’s top professionals are joining together to give back to the community at large by producing Hope Operas. Hope Operas are five serialized shows that will run for six weeks. Each week each show will present a 15-minute episode ending in a cliffhanger and each show is raising money for a local charity. The audience will vote for their favorite serial and moneys will be distributed according to popularity with the most popular serial getting the most money for their charity etc.

The Hope Operas open Monday, October 5th and run Monday nights through November 9th at 8:00 PM at Miss Pixie’s Backroom Palace, 1626 14th St., N.W. Admission: $10

20 MILLION … stars Lucrezia Blozia, Nkemjika Ofodile, Oscar Ceville, Yasmin Tuazon and Hugh Bris with special appearances by local tv celebrity Dick Dyszel (Count Gore de Vol, Capt. 20), local drag royalty Shiqueeta Lee, art impresario Philippa Hughes and a host of great local theatre talent including Helen Hayes winner Jennifer Mendenhall, who are all generously donating their time to this Hope Opera. Proceeds benefit the Mautner Project.

Gallery Talk with Artist John Dreyfuss

Please join us for a gallery talk with artist John Dreyfuss who will discuss his works on view in the Sylvia Berlin Katzen Sculpture Garden at the American University Museum.

Featuring six large-scale works by sculptor John L. Dreyfuss, this exhibition is an exploration into the evolution of form and the wonder of invention. Referencing bones and early tool shapes, each work examines the relationship between form, strength of materials and the harnessing of power. Beginning with sketches, wax, plaster and cast metal models, Dreyfuss has subtly refined each work over the past decade and, through an ongoing collaboration with aerospace engineers, has experimented with the fabrication process. Rendered for the first time at monumental scale in composite materials, these extraordinary works simultaneously draw on ancient and primal references, while being distinctly contemporary in their conception.

Andrew Wodzianski's House | Opening Reception

The opening reception for Andrew Wodzianski's House will be Thursday, October 8 from 6-8pm. Andrew's paintings lift imagery from William Castle's b-movie horror flick from 1959, House on Haunted Hill. While a painting exhibition in its own right, House will also incorporate the gimmickry and audience participation for which director Castle was legendary. Visitors to the gallery will be invited to participate in a scavenger hunt and will ultimately have the chance to win a painting from the exhibition. On Friday, October 30, a costume party will be held in conjunction with the exhibition.

Starting October 8th, Andrew Wodzianski will be releasing clues for a scavenger hunt via twitter. Five lucky people will win paintings from Wodzianski's exhibition and receive invitations for an exclusive event with the artist immediately after the October 30th House Party. Follow Wodzianski on twitter for clues and more information at: twitter.com/househuntdc.

INK STORM OPENING DAY @ TRANSFORMER:

INK STORM OPENING DAY at TRANSFORMER:
September 19, 2009; 1 – 7pm

Transformer is thrilled to be partnering with Shigeko Bork mu projects and artist/guest curator Jennifer Wen Ma in the presentation of Ink Storm at Transformer, September 18 - October 31, 2009. This exhibition highlights how artists CHEN Shaoxiong, DAI Guangyu, and Paula TSAI, incorporate ink into their work, ink, and how each individual exploration offers compelling contributions to contemporary art discourse.

Following the success of Transformer’s 2007 Big in Japan exhibition collaboration with Shigeko Bork mu project, exploring duality in contemporary Japanese art through the work of emerging Japanese artists who respond to the tradition and popular culture of Japan - Ink Storm, guest curated by artist Jennifer Wen Ma, presents three emerging Beijing based artists who re-interpret and re-invent traditional Chinese uses of ink through video, drawing, and mixed-media installation.

The subject of ink play is important to curator and artist Jennifer Wen Ma, who works in a variety of mediums including: installation, video, drawing, fashion design, and performance, as well as pursuing architectural and public works. Originally from Beijing, and now based in New York, Jennifer has participated in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally.

Need Inspiration, see Art House Co-op Projects...

For some reason, I cannot edit the blogs or websites so I will just post this as a post! There are tons of projects (you pay a small fee for shipping and materials) and you can be shown in a variety of places depending on the project(s) you sign up for. They are fun ways to make art outside of your practice and get inspired by crazy projects. Like the film one, you make a 30 second film and the following description/line/scene setup must be used at the end of your film: "Those were some good pancakes."

Strange Bodies: Figurative works from the Hirshorn collection

Strange Bodies: Figurative works from the Hirshorn collection

Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

7th Street SW at Independence Ave

Strange Bodies seems a perfect name for the exhibition of figurative contemporary works located in the lower level of the Hirshhorn Museum. The drawings, paintings, sculptures and film challenge the viewer’s perception of the human body. For example, Robert Gober's Untitled, 1990, is just a leg appearing to grow out of the gallery wall complete with pant, sock and shoe.

Walking to the back of the gallery one cannot help but notice Ron Mueck’s Untitled (Big Man), 2000. This oversize body sits dauntingly realistic alone in a corner with eyes that seem to follow you around the room as if at any moment he may come to life to attack. His figures are so human-like with fleshy skin and toenails it feels as though there is a hairless ogre in your presence.

Unlike Meuck’s overly realistic piece, Thomas Schütte created distorted views of anatomy in sculpture and photographic reproductions in the work United Enemies, A Play in 10 Scenes, 1994. The miniature figures tied to one another stand in glass cases on pedestals with spiteful looking faces. Behind the cases the wall of photographs close ups of the figures expressions.

Another artistic distortion of the figure is captured in Yinka Shonibare’s The Age of Enlightenment—Antoine Lavoisier, 2008 is an example of some of his less provocative work. His installations often contain headless mannequins wearing detailed textures imported from Africa. Although the installation is slightly less provocative, the piece contains quite a bit of irony. Antoine Lavoisier, a French aristocrat was in fact beheaded. The headless mannequin sits in a wheelchair representing Shonibare’s physical disabilities that have left him in partial paralysis. The Age of Enlightenment—Antoine Lavoisier is one of the museums more recent purchases this spring.

The exhibition continues until November 8, 2009 with some of the works staying as part of the permanent collection. Hours to the museum are 10am to 5:30pm daily. Please also check out the Hirshhorn’s podcast about Strange Bodies is an informative short on the curator’s choices.

Mark Your Calendars: This Friday Sept. 11

Civilian Art Projects
Opening reception: Friday, September 11, 7-9pm

Cara Ober: Love Letters
Love Letters is Baltimore-based artist Cara Ober’s first solo exhibition with Civilian Art Projects. Ober layers drawing, painting, and printmaking into mixed media works that examine and reinterpret sentimental imagery. Intricate and funny, Love Letters explores the relationship of the artist to image, word, and personal meaning found in the exploration of secret fantasy and expressive interlude.

Niki Painter: Debriscapes
With Debriscapes, her first solo exhibition in Washington DC, Richmond VA-based Nikki Painter exhibits new drawings and a site-specific installation that explore -- in bright neon colors, pencil lines, and various materials -- the relationship and continuum between the built and natural worlds.

Flashpoint

Opening reception: Fri., Sept. 11, 6 – 8 p.m.

Bradley Chriss: Visions from the End of the World
Bradley Chriss’ small, apocalyptic watercolors are situated at the unlikely interstice between the sentimental and the nightmarish. The intimate scale and seductive colors cajole and beguile the viewer into confronting the sinister reality that humanity is ultimately powerless within its own environment. Visions from the End of the World will open with a performance by Chriss’ performance art group, The Post-NeoAbsurdist Anti-Collective.

Flora: Growing Inspirations Exhibition

Flora: Growing Inspirations

United States Botanical Gardens

100 Maryland Ave SW

Washington, DC 20001

http://www.usbg.gov

For as long as I have been serious about my art I have wanted to have an exhibition of my ceramics informed by plant life shown at a botanical garden. The drive was sparked at the St. Louis Botanical Gardens with artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle and Dale Chihuly, who I also saw at the Phoenix Botanical Gardens. While touring the nation’s capitol I was pleasantly surprised by the show at the National Botanical Garden.

Flora: Growing Inspirations, a juried exhibition in sponsorship with the Washington Sculptors Group hosted art in the garden’s conservatory and outside in the yard featuring sculptures inspired by plants. The exhibition was the second of this plant inspired series, the first being Flora: Sculptures of the Natural World. The over thirty sculptural works from artists across the country consisted of various medias such as ceramic, wood, beeswax, steel, bronze, marble, wire and acrylics. A variety of themes were entertained while keeping in mind the plant muse such as high-heeled shoes made entirely of sage leaves or a mixed media construction of Porta Hedge, which is actually a library of field guides on wheels hidden by a wall of recycled Christmas trees.

The space of the exhibition was utilized with wall pieces, hanging forms, as well as free standing sculptures and garden decorations. The wall piece Botany by artist Jessica Broad from Pamplin, VA was of particular interest to me. The work was a group of porcelain cubes with microscopic, scientific plants drawings in red paint. Each of the drawings expressed biological forms that might be explored under magnification.

Not only were artists involved with the exhibition, specific garden rooms were designed to correspond with the sculptures by gardeners and landscape architects. Margaret Atwell and Nick Nelson worked on the modern interpretations of plants using aesthetics such as a garden of black flowers with distinct textures. Juxtaposed to the dark foliage they actualized vibrant colored, cheerful plantings.

After the visit I returned home and began working on site-specific sculptures for the gardens. I found the opportunity very exciting to show in a space surrounded by beautiful flowers. Currently I am exploring the steps to exhibit at the conservatory.

Flora: Growing Inspirations continues until October 12 and is free to the public. Hours to the conservatory are from 10am to 5pm and 10am to 7pm for the gardens.
